Ostend Dog Murders: Police Appeal for Witnesses

On December 6, the Ostend police district issued the first press release on this high-profile case. Around mid-November, on November 21 and December 2, the carcass of a dog washed up on the Oosteroever, in the area between the eastern breakwater and Fort Napoléon. In each case, the animals were quite young and were not microchipped. The dogs appear to be of a similar breed, but the state of decomposition makes it unclear the exact breed.

On December 17, a dog corpse was also found on the beach in Nieuwpoort. A day later, another dead dog washed up along the Sir Winston Churchillkaan in Ostend, near the DAB Vloot buildings. Finally, a sixth body was discovered on Wednesday along the Halve Maandijk, between the HMS Vindictive memorial and the eastern breakwater. “These three recent discoveries concern apparently young animals, probably of the same breed, and, once once more, they are not microchipped,” explains Timmy Van Assche, police spokesperson.

Local police are investigating this matter and are keeping all leads open. However, investigators note that no one has reported a missing pet. This is why the police are launching a new appeal for possible witnesses to come forward. “An appeal launched at the beginning of the month did not provide useful information, but the Ostend police remain hopeful of a breakthrough,” we read.
