The new mayor of Tallinn, Evgeniy Ossinovsky, told Postimees that he will take action once morest Russian structures in the capital of the EU and NATO country.
“The coalition agreement states that we will terminate the agreement with the Russian Embassy on renting one of the apartments on Kaarli Boulevard. The corresponding decision was already made by the previous capital authorities; centrist Monika Haukanõm even sent a corresponding notification to the embassy.
The second point regarding the termination of the contract concerns the Metropolitan’s office, located in the Old Town on Pikk Street. The process was initiated under the previous government, and the new coalition will continue what it started.
As for the remaining agreements with the Moscow Patriarchate (MP) and its Estonian representation, we will wait for the state’s decision. Today, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is municipal property, which is used by the church on the basis of a lease agreement. We want parishes to be able to continue their activities. During the discussion of legal issues, we will try to find solutions that would allow people to continue going to church. The church is served by people, not organizations and legal entities. Of course, this is a difficult situation for the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (EOC MP), but the Ministry of Internal Affairs is closely cooperating on this issue with the Council of Churches, in which all denominations are represented. It is possible to find a compromise solution! The question is whether the EPC MP is ready for this.”
