After the announcement of the Oscar nominations on January 24, social networks saw the birth of a new hashtag #OscarsSoMale
This year, five men can claim the Oscar for best director. And among the ten nominees for the Best Picture Oscar, only one, Women Talking, is signed by a director, Sarah Polley. This film, an adaptation of the novel by Miriam Toews (what they say), is also nominated for Best Screenplay. But the notable filmmakers of 2022, Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), Maria Schrader (She Said) or even Charlotte Wells (After sun). Too bad also for Alice Diop (Saint-Omer) ou Marie Kreutzer (Corset) who were up for a nomination in the best foreign film category, which also only counts films by directors.
Los Angeles’ Women In Film Association tweeted throughout the nominations announcement, saluting each woman’s name (there are 65 nominees in 18 categories). The association concluded with a scathing press release (see photo):
« Once once more, Academy voters showed they don’t value women’s voices, excluding us from Best Director nominations. An Oscar is more than a golden statue, it’s a career booster that can lead to better pay.A very useful accelerator in a country where of the 111 directors of the 100 most profitable films of the year, only 9% were women (according to USC Annenberg’s Research). It should be remembered that the last two editions of the Oscars have crowned female directors, Jane Campion in 2022 and Chloé Zhao in 2021. This should not become a habit seem to say the some 8,500 voters, a third of whom are women. The Oscars ceremony will take place on the night of March 12 to 13.
