Apple has never released meaningful viewership numbers for Apple TV+, but CODA has reportedly led to a noticeable increase in viewership for the streamer.
According to Variety, a source close to Apple said the ratings for “CODA” in the week following its award were 300% higher than the week before. The same source said there was an overall 25% increase in new viewers joining Apple TV+ in the week following the award compared to the week before.
Without actual figures, it is impossible to draw any conclusions from these claims. However, given that CODA is clearly available to both new and existing audiences, a 25% increase in new audiences while ratings are only up 300% doesn’t seem all that satisfying.
Granted, new users must choose to log into the service with their Apple ID.Therefore, the 25% increase cannot be attributed solely to the newiPhone SE buyers, etc., they happen to get three months of free Apple TV+ devices.
However, all users get some kind of free trial. Buyers of new devices can get a three-month free trial, or a one-month free trial of Apple One, including Apple TV+. Every user also gets a free trial for at least the first week.
So while an increase in the number of new viewers is hardly a bad thing, whatever the number, the question is how many will stick around.
Nielsen Ratings now tracks streaming providers including Apple, but its public records are regarding three weeks behind the air date. So it’s too early to see if “CODA” makes the list, but in the latest data on March 6, 2022, no Apple TV+ show made the top ten.
