Oscar winner William Hurt is dead – film plus criticism – online magazine for film, cinema & TV

William Hurt died on March 13, 2022. He was 71 years old. Hurt suffered from terminal prostate cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2018 and passed away as a result.

Hurt started his film career in the early 80’s with films like Hot-blooded-cold-blooded (1981) and quickly played its way into the top league of demanding actors. In the middle of the decade he was acting for the movies Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), God’s forgotten children (1986) and News Fever – Broadcast News (1987) was nominated three times in a row for the Academy Award for Best Actor, which he also won in 1985.

From the 1990s, Hurt increasingly became a character actor. He took on supporting roles in films such as AI – Artificial Intelligence (2001), The Village (2004) or Into the Wild (2007). For his outstanding portrayal of a ruthless gangster (alongside Viggo Mortensen) in A History of Violence (2005) by David Cronenberg earned him his fourth Oscar nomination, this time for Best Supporting Actor. In recent years, William Hurt has also appeared in several Marvel films.

Hurt leaves behind 4 children from different relationships.
