Oscar Piastri’s F1 Tire Care Struggles: Room for Improvement and Future Potential

Oscar Piastri admits there is still room for improvement when it comes to tire care in F1. Piastri, a 22-year-old rookie, has performed well this year alongside McLaren’s highly regarded and in-form Lando Norris, even beating Max Verstappen head-to-head in the Qatar sprint race.

But over longer distances, Piastri, like Norris, struggles to control wear on his Pirelli tires. His struggles were evident throughout the recent triple-header of the Grand Prix series. “The last three races have been frustrating,” Piastri told Auto Motor und Sport. “But we have learned a lot and this lesson will be useful next year.”However, team principal Andrea Stella backed the impressive young rookie, saying that damage to the car often had an aerodynamic impact on Piastri’s car. The company claims that this causes “further damage to the tires.” “But Oscar has the speed. The consistency is still to come,” Stella said. Piastri himself says that it has become more difficult to match up with more experienced rivals on recent circuits. “In F2 you’re competing once morest guys who’ve been around that track once or twice. Now I’m like[Fernando]Alonso, who’s been around São Paulo 20 times in his career. I’m racing people,” Piastri said. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher insists that while Piastri is still learning, he is, in fact, doing an “incredible job as a rookie and will take the next step.” “With the sprint victory he showed his potential,” Ralf Schumacher told Sky Deutschland. “Lando Norris has more experience in the long races.” “Piastri will still need some time, but he is a player with the potential to compete for titles in the future, that’s for sure.” “In the future , the duo of Norris and Piastri will definitely be one of the strongest. Norris is already at the highest level and Piastri needs another year or two. “But as a rookie, he’s already at an incredible level. has been reached.”
