The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Thursday the creation of a new category at the Oscars. From 2026, the ceremony will include an award for best casting direction. This is the first category addition to the Oscars since 2001, when the award for best animated film was introduced.
The award will recognize casting directors, responsible for selecting the artists who play roles in films. The Academy established a specific voting group for this category in 2013, which currently consists of more than 160 industry professionals.
In a statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang emphasized the importance of casting directors, describing them as an essential part of filmmaking. “We are proud to include casting directors among the honorees we recognize and celebrate,” they said.
In recent years, the Oscars have been the subject of debates regarding expanding or reducing the number of categories. Professionals in the field have called for the inclusion of a category for stunt directors, while the Academy recently established a nucleus dedicated to members of the pre- and post-production phase.
Additionally, the awards recently merged the Best Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories into a single award, simply called Best Sound, starting in 2021.
