This weekend the sad news of the death of Óscar Agudelo was announced. The Colombian singer, who was one of the most prominent artists of popular music in his country, died last Friday at the age of 91, following suffering from Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Óscar Agudelo was born in Herveo, Tolima, on September 23, 1932. Since his childhood he showed his inclination for music and participated in various musical competitions. He also joined the choirs of the Church of Padua de Tolina.

While still an altar boy, at the age of 11 he performed for the first time in public before a group of tailors in Armero, something that led him to perform in other municipalities in Colombia.

In the mid-20th century, the career of the musician (also known as “el Zorzal Criollo” like Carlos Gardel) took flight and his boleros and tangos became part of the soundtrack of Colombia and neighboring countries.

Through social networks, the Colombian Ministry of Culture pointed out that Agudelo was a “figure of popular song” and left a legacy full of songs like Those your black eyes, ungrateful woman, The Redeemer and especially The empty bed.

The Minister of Culture, Juan David Correa, wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “The bed was left empty. He left a great singer. He, along with Julio Jaramillo and Alci Acosta, accompanied millions of people on bohemian nights.”
