The first national network of associated liberal orthoptists, Orthatlantic has deployed around twenty practices in France since 2016. Orthatlantic provides patients, from infants to the elderly, with the most complete and qualitative support possible in the screening of visual disorders. For orthoptists, Orthatlantic provides efficient support on technical, legal and administrative aspects without taking any risk. financial for them.
Binocular vision is the ability of the brain to merge the images perceived by the two eyes into one, clear and simple. A 3D image is thus formed, called stereoscopic vision or relief vision. Fragile, because it is acquired late in human development, this binocular vision can be altered by various disturbances. These may include oculomotor disorders (strabismus, attention and learning disorders), changes in lifestyle (diet, screens) or even hormonal upheavals.
For comfortable and efficient binocular vision, you need aligned visual axes, supported by perfectly functional oculomotor muscles and appropriate optical correction.
Prevent eye fatigue
Orthoptists are the only health professionals authorized to treat functional vision disorders. The massive use of screens (from 3 hours to 5 hours/day on average) leads to excessive strain on the oculomotor muscles and the retina which, in an attempt to maintain a clear image through ineffective adjustments, alters physiologically but in a way reversible binocular vision.
Called visual asthenopia, this overuse leads to more or less daily and chronic functional discomfort whose symptoms, both ocular, visual and general, are varied: feeling of tension, dryness, heaviness of the eyelids, tingling, pain on pressure, vision blur or double, haze, reduced vision, dazzling, headache, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, neck pain, dizziness, attention problems.
The only vision professionals authorized to detect and treat functional vision disorders, orthoptists can determine the origin of visual asthenopia or binocularity disorder through an orthoptic assessment. As a result, they can advise:
- A verified and adapted optical correction;
- Uniform and good quality lighting;
- Contrast greater than 75%;
- 20/20/20 techniques. Breaks every 20 minutes, for 20 seconds while looking beyond 20m;
- A screen at a distance of 80 cm from the eyes and tilted slightly below the visual axis;
- Blink your eyes regularly;
- Optimization of visual performance via orthoptic rehabilitation;
- Advice on the use of screens in children: prohibited before 3 years and a time adapted to each age.
Innovative orthoptic rehabilitation tools
Rehabilitation techniques have progressed significantly in recent years, bringing orthoptic rehabilitation into the 2.0 era. Thus, to re-educate their patients according to the origin of the functional discomfort, orthoptists today have a range of innovative tools combining new technologies and orthoptic expertise.
Rehabilitation software allows the patient to be proactive and direct their own rehabilitation by remote control or joystick, on a virtual reality headset, in the office or via telecare.
For patients with visual posture or balance problems, Orthatlantic has them work on a treadmill or balance platform. For visually impaired patients, all offices are equipped with the necessary demonstration equipment to improve their daily lives.
The use of these new techniques allows an improvement in visual performance and a better treatment of vision disorders, whether binocular (strabismus, muscular insufficiency, amblyopia, balance disorder of visual origin), functional and resulting visually impaired (low vision) or resulting from neurovisual damage (school learning disorders, hyperactivity, attention deficit, autism, stroke, neurodegenerative diseases).
For optimal orthoptic treatment (PEC) of visual fatigue, you need 10 to 12 sessions of 20 minutes each at the rate of one per week in the office or, for more flexibility, via telecare.
At the end of his PEC, the patient leaves with Orthatlantic advice to apply on a daily basis and possible maintenance exercises.
Always better meet expectations
A skills accelerator, Orthatlantic offers monthly in-house training and daily coaching to orthoptists who join its network. The business software used allows perfect harmony of practices and facilitated internal communication.
For patients, it is the guarantee of access to an expert orthoptist, at the cutting edge of innovative technologies.
Building on its relevance, Orthatlantic intends to expand its territorial coverage in order to better meet the expectations of both orthoptists and patients.
In 2024, around ten openings or mergers of firms are planned.
