Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega criticized Latin American leaders who have not recognized Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) for proclaiming Nicolás Maduro re-elected president after Sunday’s presidential election, and accused those countries of being subservient to the United States.

In a speech on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Nicaraguan Air Force, the Nicaraguan president said, without offering evidence, that “a large number of Latin American governments” are part of a “plan” that “was very well organized,” along with Venezuelan opponents, “to all go against the election results” that, according to the CNE, give victory to Maduro.

Question mark

Ortega, who is Maduro’s main ally in Central America, asked who “had appointed electoral judges” for these Latin American leaders.

Ortega also criticized the United States, which he called “Pharisees,” for disqualifying the official results of the elections in Venezuela, when, he said, “fraud” occurred in that country in the elections in which George W. Bush defeated Al Gore, and in the elections in which President Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump.
