Located 100 miles off the Yorkshire coast, the future wind farm, due to be completed towards the end of 2027, is expected to be able to provide electricity to more than 3.3 million homes.

The Danish group Ørsted, specializing in renewable energies, announced this Wednesday the finalization of its project to build the largest offshore wind farm in the world, called Hornsea 3, which is to be built off the British coast. “Ørsted has made the final investment decision for the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea 3, which will have a capacity of 2.9 GW and is expected to be completed towards the end of 2027“, indicated the group in a press release. Located 100 miles off the Yorkshire coast, the wind farm is expected to be able to supply electricity to more than 3.3 million homes.

Ørsted currently operates 12 offshore wind farms in the UK, including Hornsea 1 and 2. Once the new turbines are up and running, “the Ørsted site in Hornsea – comprising the Hornsea 1, 2 and 3 offshore wind farms – will have a combined capacity of more than 5 GW, making it the largest commissioned offshore wind site in the world», Underlined the group.

Competitive prices

In addition, the majority of contracts related to the Hornsea 3 investments were signed before the recent price increases due to inflation, allowing competitive prices to be achieved, said Ørsted, who recently had to give up to a huge offshore wind farm project in the United States.

Wind power is in difficulty despite European ambitions to green their energy sources. At a time when the sector needs to invest massively to meet expected demand, it is caught up by soaring interest rates and material costs. On Hornsea 3, the larger turbines and synergies with Hornsea 1 and 2 should “result in lower operating costs than those observed so far», noted the Danish group. Ørsted also plans to build the Hornsea 4 offshore wind farm in this area, which might produce 2.6 GW.
