Orsi says that “the situation in Venezuela today is indefensible”

Yamandú Orsi, candidate for the left-wing Frente Amplio party in Uruguay’s presidential elections, said in Buenos Aires that “the situation in Venezuela today is indefensible.”

The political godson of former Uruguayan President José Mujica (2010-2015) participated in an event with businessmen, organized in the Argentine capital by the Inter-American Council of Commerce and Production, during which he was questioned about various current political and economic issues.

In addition to Uruguay’s situation in Mercosur (a bloc it shares with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia), the former mayor of the Uruguayan department of Canelones (south) was asked about the situation in Venezuela following the elections held on July 28.

“In the context of a democratic country-dictatorship, the situation in Venezuela today is indefensible. But it is not a common dictatorship. There is a geopolitical issue that needs to be paid attention to and there is a lot of risk there. If before there was legitimacy provided by the electoral bodies that existed, with the latest experience I think there are no two answers,” he said.

Results in doubt

Uruguay is one of the countries that questioned the electoral result that gave the current president, Nicolás Maduro, the victory of the elections; consequently, its diplomats had to leave the country after being forced by the Venezuelan government following these criticisms.

On September 5, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Omar Paganini announced that the South American country was going to join a complaint against Venezuela for crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“I think there is a very authoritarian regime and they fall into the categories that we usually describe as dictatorships; but the geopolitical issue needs a lot of attention,” said Orsi, who added that he does not like “the de-Westernization of Venezuela,” in the sense that it has lost its “harmonious relationship” with the rest of the region.

Elections in Uruguay

Uruguay’s elections to name a successor to the current president, the center-right Luis Lacalle Pou, for the 2025-2030 period will be held on October 27 and, if none of the candidates achieve an absolute majority, there will be a second round on November 24.

The president will leave office on March 1, 2025, since immediate re-election is not permitted in Uruguay. His political party, the National Party (PN), is presenting Álvaro Delgado as its candidate, who was his presidential secretary until last December, to focus on the elections.
