Saturday August 5, 2023 ((rezonodwes.com)) – In Orlando, early Saturday evening, the suspect involved in the shooting of two police officers in Florida was shot dead by members of the SWAT team following taking refuge several hours at a hotel in Orlando’s tourist district. That ended a manhunt across central Florida, police officials said.

Orlando Police Department officers had stopped a vehicle around 11 p.m. Friday as part of a homicide investigation in Miami. They were targeted by the suspect inside the car, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said at a news conference early Saturday morning.

The officers, who were not immediately identified, were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Hospital officials announced Saturday followingnoon that officers are expected to make a full recovery.

“Today is a sad day for our department,” Smith said. “These officers are here every day to protect our community. »

The suspect then stole another vehicle and police pursued him, but did not immediately capture him.

About seven hours later, officers located the suspect at a Holiday Inn hotel near Universal Orlando Resort in the city’s tourist district. Hotel guests were evacuated as a precaution. The suspect refused to surrender and opened fire on the officers, who returned fire, Smith said at an early followingnoon news conference.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said he went to the hospital to meet with the families of the officers.

“Our entire community sends our thoughts and prayers to these officers,” Dyer said at the press conference.
