Orienteering: The Charente, the ideal playground

2023-10-25 10:00:33

The Charente-Maritime Orientation association is organizing the French orienteering championships from October 26 to 30 as well as the Critérium National for relay teams.

“Adapt, respond to the challenges of the plotter, go from one beacon to another, orient yourself by reading a map, choose the best possible route, blend into nature”. This is how the Charente-Maritime Orientation (CMO) association presents its discipline, orienteering. From October 26 to 30, it organizes the French championships in this sport as well as the Critérium National for relay teams. “We chose the Forêt de la Coubre, classified Natura 2000, to organize this week of racing. The commune of Les Mathes-La Palmyre and the Hippodrome are kind enough to host the event. indicates the CMO.

For the president of the Royan Atlantique Agglomeration community, the Charente environment is particularly favorable to orienteering. “There are no less than seven Sports Orientation Spaces which have been developed in the region and which allow regular practice, accessible to beginners, families or more experienced athletes, informs Vincent Barraud. The practice of these sports and natural leisure activities is both a way of discovering and promoting our natural and urban heritage, but also of promoting a territory”.

Multiple formats

Concerning the program, the event brings together several events: an urban sprint, an inter-regional medium distance race, the French sprint and night championships and the Critérium National for relay teams. Regarding the urban sprint format (October 26), it is characterized by a very high running speed for a period of 12 to 15 minutes while remaining constantly reading the map. All runners are quarantined for one hour before the first start. “This allows the organizers to place the markers without the gaze of the competitors”, explains the CMO. A start for each category of runners is given every minute, who then discovers the map, once the start has started.

On October 29, nearly 1,500 competitors, representing 120 clubs, will compete in teams in the form of relays during the Critérium National des Équipes (CNE) from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s an uninterrupted parade staged for 8 hours which will transform the place into an infernal sporting cavalcade”. The teams entered begin the night race on courses adapted to each category, from the elite trophy to the licensees’ challenge. The competition will end the next day with the night event of the French championships.
