“WHO I AM” is a documentary series that follows Paralympic athletes that started in 2016 as a joint project between WOWOW and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), and has featured 40 para-athletes from 25 countries so far. With the new season starting from January 20th next year, this day’s event featured a preview of wheelchair tennis player Kaito Oda from the latest season of “WHO I AM Paralympics.”
Oda was not originally scheduled to appear on stage, but he rushed from the venue of the 2023 53rd Prime Minister’s Cup Japan Professional Sports Awards, which was being held just before the event. It was greeted with applause.
During the talk, he talked regarding his mindset when playing, and looked back on 2023, saying, “It’s always been my dream to win a Grand Slam, so that year came true.” “We had some tough moments in the second half, but the first half was a really good period. We’re stronger now,” he said with a smile.
Toward the end of the contest, participants were asked regarding their goals for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Oda was silent for a while, then asked, “…on the other hand, what do you want to see?” “I think it’s all regarding what everyone thinks. I think what I need to do is embody what everyone wants me to do, and in the end, that’s what I want.” “It will become a dream and a goal,” he declared.
In response to these “apparent” words, Matsuoka pointed the microphone at the fans in the audience, and the fans announced, “We’re the winner!”
In response to this comment, Oda said, “I’m really happy that people think that way, and of course that’s what I’m aiming for.If more people want that, maybe my desire to win will increase.” I think the number will increase accordingly, so please support us.” he said with a smile.
Starting in 2022, the project will add an additional series, “WHO I AM LIFE,” which will include content beyond the framework of sports, including artists and creators, and expand the content to two lines with “WHO I AM Paralympics.” Furthermore, with the motto “Broadcasting is not a goal, but a start,” we are promoting diversity, including special classes by gold medalists, turning videos into teaching materials, lectures and lectures, creating books and comics, launching universal sports events, and collaborating with companies. We continue to widely communicate to society the realization of a future society where people recognize each other’s values.
