CUERNAVACA.- Leo, the 16-year-old teenager who was struck by lightning during a football matchmade his best play and donated his organs to save lives.

His death, said his mother Gabriela Gómez, will also be the starting point of a campaign to demand that the authorities guarantee safety in recreational spaces for users.

“In the last two visits I told him: ‘prepare your play as you always prepared it: slow, don’t run and suddenly score your goal of life’, and that is what my son did and so let’s celebrate the goal of life that he scored, because it will be for life“, he shared.

We want to raise awareness among the population and promote organ donation, since Leo donated organs in order to save more lives.

On the afternoon of last Sunday, July 28, a lightning bolt struck and injured Leo on sports fields in the Antonio Barona neighborhood, during a football match in the middle of the rain.

Friends and family reported that the death occurred on August 4, around 12:00 noon in a hospital in Mexico City, where he was transferred to be treated for the cellular level burns and an injury to the spleen that he sufferedaccording to his relatives.

They demand security for young athletes

The young footballer’s family said they were devastated by the incident. However, they will now seek to honour Leo’s memory by requesting security for young people who come to play football.

First they urged the State Government, deputies and senators, to ensure the safety of people in sports facilities and that Civil Protection enforce restrictions in the event of adverse weather conditions, such as rain, thunderstorms, high temperatures or heat stroke.

He called for the joint responsibility of league directors, technical directors, referees, coaches and parents to guarantee the safety of children. They also requested that recreational spaces such as stadiums, fields and sporting event sites be covered and have access to medical services.

The minor’s family reported that they will use all the financial resources, products of the donations that were made for Leo’s benefit, to materialize this fight for the safety and integrity of children and young people in sports.
