Once the biggest video game event, E3 is officially dead, its organizers announce. Covid certainly played a role in this decision, but the video game industry has also evolved a lot.
“I never got to do E3. » This is what some players around the world are probably saying (not necessarily the youngest). After having struggled to get back on its feet in the post-covid years, offering an entirely digital edition in 2021 and canceling the 2022 and 2023 editions, the organizers of the former high mass of video games are calling the end of the match. The last E3 organized in person is therefore the 2019 edition.
In the Washington PostPierre-Louis, president of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced the news. “We know that the entire industry, gamers and creators alike, are passionate regarding E3. We share this passion. We know it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a beloved event, but it’s the best thing to do given the new opportunities for our industry to reach fans and partners. »
The fall had started before Covid
It’s impossible not to think of the Game Awards 2023 which just ended at the beginning of December, in an edition strongly criticized for its somewhat too heavy use of , or even of the Summer Game Fest, two events launched by former journalist Geoff Keighley. Initially, the Summer Game Fest had positioned itself as a direct competitor to E3, even if it never took the plunge into becoming a general public event, preferring to broadcast the conference online. It has now replaced its model.
E3 was once the biggest event on the video game planet, the unmissable event for all studios and publishers. Around the 2010s, the show began to lose its luster somewhat, as the biggest publishers began broadcasting online events on streaming platforms, thus saving costs and controlling timings.
The video game industry has changed
“Today, businesses have access to consumers and business connections through a variety of means, including their own storefronts,” confirms Pierre-Louis with the Washington Post. An end that he looks at with a fairly positive eye, explaining that the end of E3 also means that the video game industry has blossomed in several different ways. “Each of these large companies can create an individual showcase (…) [et] partner with other industry events to showcase the breadth of gaming. »
One of the examples of this phenomenon can be found in the GTA VI trailer, as the journalist pointed out Oscar Lemaire early December: the first trailer for GTA V, in 2013, had recorded 8.7 million views one month following it was posted online, while that of GTA VI peaked at 57 million views 11 hours following its publication. Who needs a physical video game event in a world where players now know where to find the trailers themselves.
