A well-known Paraguayan prosecutor was shot dead while on his honeymoon on the tourist island of Baro in Colombia.
Judge Marcelo Pesci is one of the well-known judges in the fight once morest organized crime. He was on a well-known beach when two people approached him and shot him, killing him.
Hours before the shooting, the judge’s wife, journalist Claudia Aguilera, announced that she was pregnant.
Aguilera said that two strangers approached them while they were on a private beach, before they suddenly shot Bishi, adding that he had not received any threats.
Aguilera told El Tiempo newspaper, “Two men attacked Marcelo, following they reached the beach, in a small boat, or a jet-bike, the truth is I didn’t see well.”
She added that as soon as they approached, “without warning, they hit him with two bullets, one in the face and the other in the back.”
Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez described the attack as a “cowardly assassination”.
“The cowardly assassination of Judge Marcelo Pesci in Colombia grieved all the people of Paraguay,” he added in a post on his Twitter account.
He also said: “We condemn, with all possible force, this heinous crime, and affirm our commitment to fighting organized crime.”
“The attackers reached the beach, attacked and killed one of our guests,” the hotel in which the couple were staying said in a statement.
Prosecutor Augusto Salas, a colleague of Pecci, said the attack “is similar to the work of the mafia gangs specialized in the drug trade, and I prefer their responsibility, until proven otherwise.”
Paraguayan investigators, in cooperation with the Colombian police chief, launched the investigation in the area.
The director of the Colombian National Police, Jorge Vargas, said that US officials will provide assistance to the investigators.
Beshi specialized in combating organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorist financing.
The judge took over the trial of former Brazilian football star Ronaldinho, in 2020, following he tried to enter Paraguay, using a false passport.
