Organization to ‘Treat 2 Million Children Free’ with Telemedicine

Dr. Ahsan Rabbani, the head of Child Life Foundation, a social organization that provides free treatment to thousands of children in many cities of Pakistan, says that the infant mortality rate in Pakistan is twice as high as that of all countries in South Asia.

Dr. Ahsan Rabbani, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, said that “At present, compared to all the countries of South Asia, the number of newborns in Pakistan is Mortality rate is twice as high, which is in dire need of reduction.

“For this purpose, children in rural and remote areas have to be given quality and free treatment, which is possible only through telemedicine.”

According to Dr Ahsan Rabbani: ‘Every day in Pakistan 1000 newborns die due to lack of proper health facilities and this number is much more than road accidents, heart diseases and all other deaths in Pakistan.

Child Life Foundation has been working in Sindh for the last 14 years, due to which the child mortality rate in the province is half that of other provinces.

Child Life is providing telemedicine services to hospitals in 313 cities of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, while work will also be started in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa soon.

He said, “We started our work at Dr Rathfao Civil Hospital Karachi, when the mortality rate among the children brought there was 80 percent, which is one to two percent today.”

According to Dr. Ahsan Rabbani, so far Child Life Foundation has successfully treated 8 million children.

According to Dr. Ahsan Rabbani: ‘Our goal is that if any child is sick in Pakistan, he should be within half an hour’s distance from our center. We want to be present everywhere and treat children for free.

‘Travel expenses to a big city hospital, delays in treatment increase the risk to the child’s life.

“Instead of referring hospitals in these suburbs to hospitals in the big city, we started telemedicine for the sake of quality treatment.”

Therapeutic approach in telemedicine

Dr. Ahsan Rabbani said that along with training the staff of 313 district and tehsil hospitals of Kashmir administered by Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Pakistan, cameras have also been installed there.

Doctors and other staff at these hospitals take information about the illness, age, weight, fever and illness of the sick children who come, which is updated in a software.

“Senior doctors in our centers who specialize in pediatrics and various children’s diseases, besides looking at the children coming to these hospitals on their computer screens, also see the information of these children in the software and prescribe medicine after the tests.”

Child Life Foundation doctors sitting in these centers see the children live with the help of cameras.

According to Dr Ahsan Rabbani: ‘The doctors and other staff working with Child Life Foundation are young people. The average age of the 1,800 people working with ChildLife Foundation is 29 years.

“Due to telemedicine, not only the children get better treatment on time, but the doctor there is also trained and those doctors are starting to provide better treatment in the hospitals of these suburbs.
