Organic Walnuts Recall Linked to E. Coli Outbreak: CDC Issues Warning

In a recent multistate outbreak, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning regarding a strain of E. coli linked to organic walnuts. The outbreak has affected twelve individuals from two states, with seven requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported thus far.

An investigation by the CDC revealed that most of the affected individuals had purchased organic walnuts from bulk bins found in natural food stores and co-ops in California and Washington state. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) subsequently traced the source of the tainted walnuts to Gibson Farms, a certified organic farm in Hollister, California.

As a precautionary measure, Gibson Farms voluntarily recalled its Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts. The FDA has listed the stores believed to have sold these contaminated walnuts.

Although cases have only been reported in Washington and California, the recalled walnuts were also distributed to stores in various other states, including Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.

These walnuts, which bear expiration dates ranging from May 21, 2025, to June 7, 2025, may have been repackaged into plastic bags by some stores. It is crucial for individuals who have purchased these walnuts to refrain from consuming them and to properly dispose of them, while thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces they may have come into contact with.

E. coli infections typically resolve within a week for most people, but severe symptoms can occur in individuals with underlying medical conditions. These symptoms include stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and potentially kidney failure. It is especially important for the elderly and children to exercise caution. If there is a suspicion of E. coli infection, it is advised to consult a healthcare professional.
