Organic stores are gradually finding their audience. Their products were very popular during the lockdown, but the purchasing power crisis passed and sales plummeted. They are now up 10%, thanks to what some call the “Delhaize effect”.
Packaged or in bulk, organic products are making a comeback. They are increasingly present in customers’ shopping carts. The reason: wage indexation and slowing inflation. “We paid a little more attention last year due to rising energy costs, but it’s important to eat well, no matter what.“, says a client met in Erpent, Namur.
After a drop in turnover last year, sales are on the rise once more in organic stores. Over the past three months, these have seen an increase of 10-20%.
Vanessa Charlier is the manager of a chain of organic stores. She sees, once more, more and more customers visiting her stores: “The purchasing power which has increased following the increase in wages has allowed customers, who had lost us a little, to come back to us.“, she rejoices.
I hope we kept some customers following this closure of Delhaize
Some also note a “Delhaize phenomenon”. They recover customers from the supermarket chain, still disturbed by a social movement since March 7: “Inevitably, people had to go to a store to get food. We welcomed them into our home. I hope we kept some customers following this closure of Delhaize“, adds Vanessa Charlier.
The circuit also runs
Organic enthusiasts, some customers also go for the short, local circuit, closer to consumers. Gatien Cremer manages an organic market gardening project in Loyers (Namur). For the past two to three weeks, sales have been doing better: “On one hectare, there are five jobs. I don’t think we can talk regarding the same thing regarding producers who supply mass distribution“.
While the conventional sector is down 10%, organic consumption is still largely in the minority with 2.5% market share over the first four months of the year.
