The experimentation with green ordinances implemented in Strasbourg to raise awareness among pregnant women regarding endocrine disruptors might be generalized to all French women.

Given the success encountered, the green ordinance system which was only an experiment will be renewed and extended to Strasbourg. Since November 2022, it has enabled more than 800 volunteer pregnant women to be made aware of endocrine disruptors during the duration of their pregnancy. They were thus able to benefit from a free basket of organic fruits and vegetables every week for seven months, and workshops on food as well as cosmetics, toys and even household products.

A period of greater vulnerability

The objective of this system is for pregnant women to better understand and protect themselves from endocrine disruptors, at a time when they and their babies are more vulnerable. Indeed, according to the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Considered), certain periods of life called “exposure windows”, present an increased sensitivity to certain of these substances, in particular that of feto-embryonic development or early childhood.

Transform the way you consume

« 11,000 baskets were distributed, more than 80 workshops organized in all districts of the city and, beyond future mothers, it is generally their entire family who have been made aware and who change their behavior », welcomes Alexandre Feltz, deputy in charge of Health at Strasbourg Town Hall. Especially since this green prescription is prescribed by health professionals, gynecologists, midwives and general practitioners, and is therefore not only addressed to women who are aware of it.

Green prescriptions accessible to all French women

In Strasbourg, this initiative will therefore be open in 2024 more widely to 1,500 future mothers, for whom pre-registrations are already open. This device is also the subject ofa bill brought to the National Assembly so that all French women can benefit from it. “ If there are interesting elements in the 2nd national strategy on endocrine disruptorsfew concrete actions are proposed like that of green ordinances, even though it is easy to implement, transforms people’s lives and creates jobs », Underlines Sandra Regol, deputy for Bas-Rhin, vice-president of the environmental group in the National Assembly and the originator of this bill.

700 million euros versus 160 billion euros

How to finance this system on a national scale, estimated at around 700 million euros per year, by extrapolating the budget from the 500,000 euros needed for the 800 Strasbourg residents to the 723,000 births in the territory in 2022? “ It is truly an essential public health investment which is not exorbitant in view of the costs generated by exposure to endocrine disruptors which would reach almost 160 billion euros at the European level », specifies Sandra Regol.
