NAIROBI (AFP) – Some of the victims had lost their organs following a cult allegedly starved their followers to death, police said Wednesday. The possibility of forced organ harvesting has surfaced. (Pictured is self-proclaimed pastor Paul McKenzie Nusenge)
On the same day, 22 more bodies were found in Shakahora Forest, bringing the total number of deaths since the discovery of the mass grave last month to 133. Police expect to find more bodies in the next few days.
Police believe most of the victims were members of a cult led by Paul McKenzie Nusenge. The suspect allegedly starved believers to death so they might “see Jesus Christ.”
“The autopsy report showed that some of the exhumed bodies were organ-free,” said investigator Martin Munene, in a statement filed in court in the capital Nairobi.
“There were multiple people involved and the organ trafficking was highly organized,” he said. However, it did not go into detail regarding the allegations of organ trafficking.
Munene said Ezequil Odero, a prominent TV missionary who was arrested last month in connection with the incident, had received “large sums of money” from cult members. The suspect was released on bail on April 4.
A Nairobi court has ordered authorities to freeze more than 20 bank accounts held by Odello for 30 days.
The followers are known to have sold properties at the direction of their leader, McKenzie.
Interior Minister Kitule Kindiki, who visited the site on Wednesday, said a joint team of authorities was currently investigating at least 20 mass graves.
“Unfortunately, there are still many graves in this forest. This leads me to the conclusion that it is a highly organized crime,” he said.[Translation Editing AFPBBNews]
