“The Taste of Europe – The Gironde” (9:05 a.m.)
In search of the taste of Europe, this time the focus is on the landscapes and cuisines of the Gironde. Director Martin Traxl and presenter Lojze Wieser go to the region in southwest France, which is characterized by its proximity to the Atlantic, the breathtaking vineyards and centuries-old châteaux as well as the omnipresent French charm. In Bordeaux, the capital of the Gironde, a museum was dedicated to the area’s culinary flagship, wine, the “Cité du Vin”, and the futuristic building also set an architectural monument. Even apart from the vine juice, there are many culinary specialties and dishes “à la Bordelaise” to discover here, such as the sweet cannelés, whose origins are also linked to wine production, or the crevettes blanches, the white shrimps that are still from the region The last shrimp fishermen catch them in fish traps in the Garonne and are best enjoyed freshly caught on the boat.
In Saint-Émilion, with its extraordinary monolithic church carved in stone, you can find the original form of macarons in the bakeries, which are still baked there today according to a centuries-old recipe. The town of Bazas, located southwest of Bordeaux, gives its name to a rare breed of cattle that is still bred here: the Bazadaise cattle, which were previously kept as work animals and are now attracting more and more attention because of their excellent meat quality. Finally, the Bassin d’Arcachon attracts gourmets with oysters and nature lovers with the largest shifting dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat.
“Albert Camus – An Icon of Resistance” (9:50 a.m.)
Novelist, journalist, playwright: Albert Camus was a rebel who rejected totalitarianism and all forms of tyranny and oppression. The philosopher, who was born on November 7, 1913 and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957, remains one of the most widely read French writers in the world and is more relevant today than ever. His lyrics are sprayed on walls and quoted in rock and rap songs; he is an inspiration for future generations and an icon of pop culture.
But how did the Franco-Algerian, who came from extremely humble backgrounds, develop into one of the formative intellectuals of the 20th century and beyond?
Fabrice Gardel and Mathieu Weschler’s documentary traces Camus’s struggles and commitment, revealing little-known aspects of his personal life that provide a key to understanding his work.
Albert Camus was a generous bon vivant who inspired his circle, but snubbed his relatives – especially his wife – through alternating affairs and presented them with great challenges. He was an uncompromising fighter for justice who wrote with a sharp pen once morest the monstrosities of the Second World War and thus exposed himself to great danger in his resistance.
The film describes his career from an extremely talented student to a Nobel Prize winner and also sheds light on his supporters and opponents as well as his changing friendship with his colleague and rival Jean-Paul Sartre. The documentary shows previously unpublished images and impressive reports from his daughter Catherine Camus, the rapper Abd Al Malik and the philosopher Raphaël Enthoven.
