“ORF III Theme Monday” with five travel documentaries

i.a. with “Cruise once more at last! – Full steam ahead out of the crisis?” and “Travel desire, travel frustration – tourism following Corona”

Vienna (OTS) On Monday, July 4, 2022, the “ORF III Theme Monday” will present the challenges and trends in the travel industry in five documentaries – from cruises to mass tourism to home office on the beach.

The main evening starts with the film “Cruise once more at last! – Full steam ahead out of the crisis?” (8:15 p.m.), which shows the well-known problems of the cruise industry. Cruise ships are considered to be harmful to the climate and overcrowded port cities suffer from the rush of many holidaymakers. After the compulsory break caused by the corona, passengers are now flocking to the holiday steamers once more. Is the new beginning a chance to clear up old image problems?

After that, “Cruise on a new course – junkyard or maiden voyage?” (9:05 p.m.) will show the direction in which the industry is currently developing. After a wave of bankruptcies caused by the pandemic, many ocean liners no longer went on long journeys, but ended up in the scrap heap, including in Aliaga, Turkey. Nevertheless, new cruise ships for 5,000 travelers and more are being built, for example in Papenburg in northern Germany.

Then the documentary “Travel desire, travel frustration – tourism following Corona” (9:40 p.m.) can be seen. Using several cruise hotspots such as Venice or Amsterdam, she investigates the extent to which the downsides of cheap tourism are reviving. Has global tourism learned anything from the two-year forced break or will everything continue as before?

The subject of cheap mass tourism is also the focus of the production “Expulsion from the holiday paradise – is mass tourism on the verge of extinction?” (10:15 p.m.). Tourism experts hardly assume that this summer will seamlessly follow the old conditions. The concept of cheap mass tourism, which has already been rejected by many, should not be easy to continue. What does that mean for the millions of people who depend on summer tourism in holiday destinations?

Working where other make vacation? The so-called digital nomads roam the world, often in camper vans, and pitch their tents wherever they please. The film “Home office on the beach – with the notebook on a trip around the world” (11:05 p.m.) deals with this ever-growing trend.
