Orbán’s message to Ukraine – 2024-07-19 21:42:56

EPG Summit

“The EU must not copy the foreign policy of the US Democrats. Our concept is regarding a European approach based on strategic autonomy.” This was stated by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the 4th Summit of the European Political Community (EPC).

The 4th EPG summit at Blenheim Palace near Oxford is being hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The 47 heads of state and government of the initiative’s member states were invited to discuss their aid for Ukraine. Orbán stressed to journalists that his message to Ukraine was: “We are on your side!” There is still a long way to go to peace, because many countries are in favor of war because they believe that they can destroy the Russians with military power. “I do not share this view. I know the Russians, the Ukrainians, the entire context, and I do not see a solution to this conflict on the battlefield.” Thousands of people lose their lives every day in the war in Ukraine – that is why negotiations must be held to end this senseless bloodshed.

Commenting on the tense situation in Georgia, Orbán noted that many European politicians, unlike him, do not appreciate the country’s efforts to defend its sovereignty in all directions. “Georgia is a wonderful country whose government is trying to preserve its independence under extremely difficult circumstances.”

The EPG is an intergovernmental forum for political and strategic debates on the future of Europe, established in 2022 on the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron. The first summit took place in October 2022 at Prague Castle, and Hungary will host the 5th summit on November 7.
