Orange Satellite Offer: An Alternative to Starlink for Remote Internet Access

2023-11-16 13:07:30

To defend itself against Starlink which is gradually gaining market share in this niche, Orange has just launched a satellite offer under its brand. Intended for the unfortunate people not eligible for fiber, the subscription Satellite Orange includes an internet connection of up to 200 Mb/s and unlimited telephone access to many countries for €49.99/month. The first month is free and you have to commit to one year.

The offer requires a kit available for purchase at €299 or rental for €8/month. It can be installed independently or by a professional for €299. Households that do not have a good wired internet connection can benefit from a free installation or kit under the program Digital Cohesion of Territories.

Satellite Orange is operated by Nordnet, the subsidiary of the historic operator specializing in satellite. This satellite offer is therefore not really a first for Orange, but by attaching its name to it and marketing it in its usual distribution channels, the operator hopes to better fight against the innovative Starlink.

The SpaceX subsidiary, which charges €40/month (plus €450 for hardware) for its connection of around 200 Mb/s, has forced Orange to make an effort on the price: when 200 Mb/s costs €79.90/month at Nordnetthey therefore only cost €49.99/month at Orange.

In its press release, the historic operator announces up to 15 Mb/s in upstream speed (roughly the same as with Starlink), but it says nothing about latency. However, this is precisely where its offer will continue to fall short compared to that of Starlink. Orange draws its connection from the Eutelsat Konnect VHTS satellite located in geostationary orbit more than 35,000 km above our heads, while Elon Musk’s company operates much lower satellites (from 550 to 1,150 km). As a result, Orange’s latency should be around 800 ms, which makes certain uses impossible, such as cloud gamingwhile that of Starlink is less than 20 ms.

Orange indicates its offer is “unlimited”, but we do not yet know if, like its subsidiary Nordnet, the operator slows down the connection after a certain quota of data consumed (we will update this article as soon as we have information). After some procrastination, Starlink is currently offering a completely unlimited offer.
