WHO would have thought that this orange cat has its own celebration day. September 1st in the United States (US) is celebrated as a day to honor the orange cat.
Founded by American software developer Chris Roy, this fun holiday honors the orange cats of the cat world. Insatiably spoiled, often misunderstood, and always ready to be petted, these orange furballs are feline celebrities.
The day also calls for building relationships with stray animals and encourages people to provide them with food and shelter. So, take advantage of this blessed day to pet stray cats, watch “Garfield,” and appreciate the orange cats in your life.
History of Orange Cat Appreciation Day
Often times the unexpected changes end up changing our lives. That’s the story of Chris Roy, a software developer turned animal rights activist. In 1997, Roy found a stray cat near his home.
Out of pity, he took the stray cat home and decided to foster it for a while. Unexpectedly, the little cat would change his life’s purpose.
Within weeks, Roy formed a special bond with the cat and gave him a permanent place in his home. The 14-pound tabby filled Roy’s days with warmth and a sense of belonging. Doobert, as he named his beloved ginger tabby, lived for 17 years.

In 2014, Doobert’s death rocked Roy’s life and dragged him into unprecedented grief. Grappling with the loss of his beloved red cat, Roy dedicated the arrival of September 1st as Red Cat Appreciation Day.
She also launched Doobert, an online app that connects animal shelters and animal rescues with volunteers around the world. Since 2014, Doobert has worked with more than 1,200 organizations across North America and built a volunteer base of more than 27,000 pet lovers and enthusiasts.
By dedicating the day to his cat’s memory, Roy aims to raise awareness of humanity’s divine duty to care for our furry friends.

Surveys show that most orange cats have a relaxed and approachable aura, making them friendlier than other cats. It should be noted that this is not a scientific conclusion, just a consensus reached.
Why are most orange cats male?
The beautiful orange color of a cat’s coat comes from the ‘red coat gene’, which is found on the X chromosome. Male cats need one chromosome to inherit the orange color, while female cats need two. This is why male cats outnumber female cats by 3:1.

Remove the stigma
The orange cat’s assertive nature makes them unpopular in pet stores. They are the second least popular cat to adopt, after black cats. The color orange is also annoying. However, there is more to them than their coat color, and we need to raise awareness to make them desirable to adopters. (nationaltoday/Z-3)
