Orange 3G Network Dismantling: What You Need to Know in Belgium – Geeko

If the month of March will see a lot of changes in the small world of Belgian telecoms, February is much calmer. Except for Orange which is starting to dismantle its 3G network in Wallonia (Flanders having already taken a little head start).

If nowadays it is more than likely that you mainly use 4G and 5G, it is not impossible that, for one reason or another, you still use 3G, for example if you have a very old model phone. But if you are an Orange customer, then be careful: you may no longer have access to the Walloon 3G network from February, depending on where you live.

Orange is not the only telephone operator that must dismantle its 3G network. On the contrary, 2024 is the year when all operators, or almost all, must get started. But Orange is however the one whose dismantling begins before the others. Paradoxically, the operator will also be the last to complete this, since Orange’s 3G network should simply cease to exist during the year 2025. Indeed, where the other operators will carry out a dismantling in once, Orange organizes itself zone by zone.

The other operators, for their part, have rather opted for the end of the year in order to organize the dismantling of 3G, but in the long term, 3G should therefore cease to exist on Belgian territory just like 2G which, paradoxically, will last a little longer (until 2027). Quite interestingly, but probably linked to questions of territorial size, France should wait until 2028 or 2030 to also get rid of 3G which is perceived as an obsolete network, and should instead start by dismantling 2G .

But which regions of Belgium will be affected first by this dismantling of the Orange network? Even if the timeline is not set in stone, Orange has already provided a timetable for the first regions concerned. We already know that Namur (and its surroundings) will be the first area covered by dismantling in French-speaking Belgium (Flanders is a little ahead, and has already started to dismantle its network in the Wetteren region. ).

Should follow the Belgian Coast and the Fagnes, then Antwerp, Ghent, Louvain and Mons. This already sets the calendar until June. The rest of Belgium should therefore follow, even if we do not yet know in what order…
