Oral health program developed in Guairá

In the second half of April, the implementation of the Oral Health Program “Growing Smiling in Vulnerable Schools” aimed at educational institutions in the department of Guairá began. Weekly visits are made with dentists from the IV Health Region and kits of brushes, toothpastes, and other oral hygiene items are delivered.

Visits to the first 25 schools began and the beneficiaries are students from initial education to sixth grade. It is an inter-institutional initiative that involves the regional organizations of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Education and Sciences and the Government of Guairá through the respective departmental secretariats.

This program “Growing Up Smiling in Vulnerable Schools” promotes oral health and is aimed, at this stage, at 2,730 children from the 25 selected schools in said department, mainly from the most deprived rural areas of the five districts of Guairá. Parents had to sign a form where they authorized health professionals to care for their children.

Dr. Claudia Benítez, in charge of Oral Health of the IV Health Region, pointed out that it is a program for the prevention and promotion of oral health that has been implemented for years, but that it is only now reaching schools further away from the urban ejido and more vulnerable. They will teach brushing techniques, oral hygiene and healthy eating. Children receive a hygiene kit. «There are many kids who don’t know a brush. We will use the PRAT (Atraumatic Restorative Procedure) technique, a method that allows cavities to be eliminated in the classroom, because manual instruments are used and we will also run the mobile clinic. We have ionomers resins, instruments and kits. We will reach the entire department. I thank Governor César Luis Sosa for supporting this team project,” said Claudia Benítez.
