Options for Missed Return to Work: What Happens if You’re Stuck Abroad

Maybe you took a few days off. The opportunity to go skiing or sunbathing. We hope that the trip will go well, but above all, the return to Belgium. In the event of a storm, for example, or a major delay, which would force your plane to remain grounded, what happens to you if you miss your return to work?

The first instinct is to notify your employer. Afterwards, four options are available to you:

1. First, leave for compelling reasons. It is also called family or social leave. Imperative means unpredictable. For example, if you have an accident on the way home or are the victim of a natural disaster. You are therefore unable to perform your position. You can be absent for up to 10 days. However, you will not be paid, unless arranged by your company. Remember to take photos and gather evidence. Your boss has the right to ask you for them.

2. The second option is to draw on your vacation days still to be taken. Or, compensatory rest or extra-legal leave.

3. The third possibility is suspension due to force majeure. Force majeure temporarily suspends the execution of your employment contract. So you don’t get a salary. But you can request temporary unemployment benefit from Onem, under conditions. Force majeure means any unforeseeable, insurmountable event. Typically, you are stuck at your vacation spot due to a storm. And there is no plane taking off, for example.

4. Finally, last option: occasional teleworking. If, of course, you are able to work remotely. Propose this option to your boss. This might be a good temporary solution.
