Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot, now knows how to do squats better than anyone

It is a greatly improved humanoid robot that Tesla presented in a video published on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday December 13. More agile, more flexible, faster but also more aesthetic, Optimus Gen 2 succeeds Optimus Gen 1, revealed in March 2023 and Optimus, its prototype unveiled in September 2022. The machine can now handle eggs without breaking them or …do squats! A capacity that is certainly not very useful but effective in impressing the gallery. Especially since Optimus, who appeared on stage alongside Elon Musk at the annual Tesla AI Day conference, had disappointed part of the public. He walked slowly and hesitantly onto the platform and waved his hand.

Touch sensors on each finger

Optimus Gen 2 – which has benefited from a makeover almost entirely camouflaging its metal structure – has been reduced by 10 kilos compared to its previous version “without sacrifice”, we learn in the Tesla video. He better manages his weight and center of gravity thanks to additional joints in his neck and toes, which allows him to move 30% faster and perform squats fluidly. At the end of the video, we even see him perform a few dance steps with ease! In addition to these improvements, Tesla’s latest has been equipped with touch sensors on each of its fingers so that it controls its strength when handling fragile objects like eggs.

Tesla specifies that all sensors and actuators on the Optimus Gen 2 were designed in-house. Enough to facilitate the future mass production of humanoids. Because Elon Musk wants to quickly market them so that they can assist humans in difficult tasks. All at a price of less than 20,000 euros… which seems very optimistic!
