Optimus robot in production next year, says Elon Musk

Elon Musk promised during the inauguration of the new Gigafactory in Texas: the manufacturer intends to launch production of the humanoid robot Optimus.

Last August, Elon Musk unveiled the Tesla Bot to everyone’s surprise, in other words a humanoid robot that looks like a high-tech mannequin. 1.77 m high, weighing 57 kg, this robot was designed to be a daily assistant. The fiery boss of the car manufacturer intends him for the tasks ” dangerous, repetitive and boring which the human does not want to take on.

No working prototype

Named “Optimus” during the inauguration of the Texas Gigafactory, the robot might be produced from 2023, announced Elon Musk. This seems extremely optimistic, Tesla having still not unveiled a working prototype, nor shown how, in reality, what the robot might really be used for.

That didn’t stop the businessman from touting a robot that will transform the world to an even greater degree than cars. ” It might be hard to imagine “, he admitted. ” I think that [le robot] has the potential to outgrow the automotive business over time “. What is certain in any case is that Optimus will not contain ” no Terminator stuff or that sort of thing ! We remember his statement on artificial intelligence even more dangerous than nuclear weapons.

During last year’s presentation of the Tesla Bot, Musk said it would contain the same chips and sensors used by the automaker’s cars for their autonomous driving functions. At the time, many thought that Optimus would be just a marketing tool to recruit artificial intelligence engineers, but in January the boss of Tesla assured that the project was a ” top priority ” for the company.

You still have to keep in mind the many unfulfilled promises of Elon Musk. Optimus may be right at the top of Tesla’s to-do list, but a 2023 launch seems highly unrealistic.
