It is now established that poor quality nights promote cardiovascular diseases, particularly the risk of stroke. But what elements come into play? Is it the duration of sleep? Waking up at night?
“Usually, studies focus on a single dimension of sleep, mainly sleep duration or the presence of sleep apnea, but good sleep or healthy sleep encompasses several dimensions,” explains Aboubakari Nambiema of Inserm.
The researchers were therefore interested in 5 elements representative of the quality of sleep, namely:
the duration of sleep each night, the chronotype (being morning or evening), the frequency of insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep apnea.
This allowed them to establish a score ranging from 0 to 5; “0” being the worst score and “5” being the highest which corresponds to good sleep habits (7 to 8 hours of sleep per night, being a morning person, not suffering from insomnia, apnea or drowsiness excessive during the day).
A risk that decreases with each point gained
They then submitted this questionnaire to participants in two population surveys intended to study the determinants of cardiovascular health, one conducted in Paris and the other in Lausanne, Switzerland. Participants they followed between 8 and 10 years.
The result is clear: compared to people who have a score of 0-1 (10% of participants), the risk of cardiovascular pathologies is reduced by 10% for participants who have a score of 2 (21%), by 19% for those with a score of 3 (32%), 38% for a score of 4 (27%) and 63% for those with the best score of 5 (10% of participants).
“In other words, nearly 60% of cardiovascular accidents might potentially be avoided if individuals all had an optimal sleep score,” says Jean-Philippe Empana, Inserm research director, at the Cardiovascular Research Center in Paris (Inserm/ Paris Cité University).
A second analysis focusing on the evolution of the sleep score over time shows that cardiovascular risk “decreased by 16% for each score point gained over time, regardless of the component of the score that was improved. »
