Optimizing Sexual Health After Prostate Cancer Treatment: Strategies and Support

2024-01-22 18:55:28

Prostate cancer management can have a significant impact on sexual health: following surgery or radiotherapy, sexual dysfunction is often the predominant long-term side effect. This complication compromises the well-being of patients and is closely linked to anxiety, depressive disorders, as well as poorer quality of life and interpersonal relationships.

Currently prescribed antitumor treatments, such as hormonal (or androgen deprivation) therapy, surgery and radiotherapy, can also negatively impact urinary and bowel functions.

It is well established that the deterioration of sexual health is correlated with an increased prevalence of chronic diseases, a low level of physical activity and a high body mass index. In addition, the occurrence of specific symptoms of prostate cancer ― notably sexual dysfunction, and the resulting distress ― are crucial aspects to take into account in treatment. It is imperative to pay special attention to sexual function and problems related to the intimate life of patients. This necessity often remains poorly understood, particularly in the event of heavy treatment, even if erectile dysfunction constitutes a frequent side effect associated with most prostate cancer treatments.
