To get in shape and enjoy good health, many people resort to following several diets, and the “one meal a day” diet (or “OMAD”) is a more extreme version of other types of fasting diets, such as intermittent fasting and eating. Time restricted.

The difference is that instead of fasting only on certain days or eating your meals during a specific period of time, people who follow OMAD eat all their daily calories in one large meal, according to the Science Alert website.

But while OMAD proponents say following this diet improves many aspects of health, we actually know very little regarding the effect of eating just one meal a day on the body, let alone whether it is safe or not.

Very few studies have looked into the effectiveness of this diet, most of which were conducted on animals, and one study found that several different types of fasting (including intermittent fasting and every other day) can improve several aspects of metabolism, including levels of fasting. blood sugar and cholesterol, reduce inflammation levels and help people better regulate their appetite. This, in turn, may help reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

According to the report prepared by Amanda Avery, lecturer in nutrition, from the University of Nottingham, a study was recently conducted on the effect of OMAD on humans, in which participants ate calories in one meal, before switching and eating their daily calories divided into three meals a day.

Each meal pattern was followed for just 11 days, with only 11 participants completing the study. When participants ate just one meal a day, they noticed a greater reduction in body weight and fat mass.

However, participants also had a greater reduction in lean mass and bone density, and this may result in decreased muscle function and an increased risk of bone fractures if the diet is followed for a longer period.

It will be important for future studies to investigate the effect of OMAD in a larger number of participants and in other groups of people, and it should also be known whether meal timing can improve outcomes further.

If someone eats only one meal a day, it will be very difficult for them to meet all their nutritional requirements, especially with regard to energy, protein, fibre, and essential vitamins and minerals, leading to the risk of constipation and poor gut health.
