Optimized School Schedules: Aligning Vacation and Learning Weeks for Improved Education

2023-10-16 03:58:31

This modification of school schedules aims to place a regular frequency between school weeks and vacation weeks: 7 weeks of classes followed by 2 weeks of vacation. The fall school vacation (All Saints’ Day) and relaxation (Carnival) periods, which used to last one week, now last two weeks. Spring holidays (Easter) therefore no longer take place in April, but in May. Finally, summer vacations are cut accordingly: students stay at school a little longer in July and start again a little earlier in August.

This measure, motivated by the opinions of educational psychologists, does not go without opposition. Parents from the Brussels periphery who have children in the French- and Dutch-speaking systems now have to put up with different holiday schedules.

From a political point of view, this measure is very supported among PS voters in Wallonia (50% for) and Brussels (48% for). In Wallonia, Engaged (61% for) and Défi (52%) voters also support the measure. Political opposition can be found on the side of the Walloon PTB (44% are opposed, 26% are for). MR voters support the measure a little less than the Walloon average.

In Brussels, the electorates of the PTB and the MR are also against these new school rhythms. 27% of Brussels communists are in favor compared to 44% unfavorable. Only 27% of Brussels MR voters support these new rhythms and 42% are opposed to them.
