Optimism and Unity: Bolzano Foxes Gear Up for ICE Hockey League Challenges

Can Fans be Optimistic? Exploring the Bolzano Foxes’ Journey

Can fans be optimistic?

Why not? After all, optimism is just another name for delusional hope, and who doesn’t love that? The Bolzano Foxes have everything they need to be a powerhouse in the ICE Hockey League—except maybe a fortune teller to view their fortunes accurately. The season has just started, and, according to our not-so-great psychic, we’ve got plenty of margin for improvement. And by “margin,” I mean a gaping chasm that you could drive a Zamboni through!

What’s the deal with their opponents?

Well, here’s a shocker: every team in the league seems to have woken up and decided to play hockey this year! I mean, this is like discovering my Grandma has started training for the Olympics—absolutely unexpected. The Foxes have yet to face only Villach, but hey, let’s not kid ourselves—every other team looks fired up and ready to knock the Foxes off their ice thrones. It’s as though all of them had a collective “beat Bolzano” meeting, and now they’re bringing their A-game. With teams gunning for them, it’s like being the piñata at a birthday party—you’re always going to get whacked!

The secret sauce of teamwork

And it seems the secret herb and spice of success is teamwork. In the past, our ice warrior has played with many teams but says nothing compares to the camaraderie he’s found in Bolzano—sort of like a great dinner party where everyone shows up with the right wine, rather than tuna casserole. He emphasizes how the winning culture relies on “friendship and respect”—not to be confused with the forced camaraderie of office Christmas parties! The new players have slotted in like they were always there, and it seems the veterans have created a positive atmosphere, which I assume includes the ‘no-question-why-you’re-slicing-the-pizza-this-way’ zone.

What’s up with the lines?

The lines—which, thankfully, are not drawn with crayons—are also in flux. Our player speaks of the various combinations on the rink as though they were musical chairs: “It’s not important who I play with, but how we play together!” Nice, but I can’t help but wonder if he’ll one day declare his love for a particular line with a flair that could rival a dramatic soap opera! Still, there’s truth to the fact that they need to find their groove. The Foxes have depth with four experienced lines, and stepping up when someone’s not playing well is key. So whether you’re having a good day or your mind is elsewhere—maybe pondering life’s unanswered questions like “do penguins have knees?”—remember, someone else is always there to pick up the slack! Bravo!

As the Foxes gear up for the season, one thing’s for sure: optimism is a state of mind—preferably while strapped into a comfy seat with a cold drink. For fans, this could be a wild ride. But as they say, tight-knit teams make winning look easy, and here’s wishing Bolzano holds on to their team spirit stronger than a child with a new toy. Because let’s face it, nobody wants to turn up to the game feeling like it’s a visit to the dentist!

Stay tuned as the Bolzano Foxes continue to navigate the icy waters of the ICE Hockey League. Who knows? They might just surprise us all—and if they do, feel free to say, “I told you so!”

Can fans be optimistic?

Absolutely, our fate lies in our own hands. We possess the talent and skill to excel, but sustained improvement is essential. There is considerable potential for growth, indeed.

To date, the Foxes have met every team in the ICE Hockey League, except Villach (game on November 13, at the Sparkasse Arena). Which teams are the most treacherous?

In all honesty, each opponent we’ve encountered has proven to be formidable, posing significant challenges with each match. I’ve been genuinely surprised by the elevated performance levels of many teams compared to the previous season. When teams come to Bolzano, their primary aim is to claim victory against us; defeating a top-tier team not only boosts their own confidence but also solidifies their status within the league. It’s clear that every team brings their A-game against us. Personally, I believed we were well-positioned to succeed last season, and the loss to Salzburg was particularly disheartening. Competing against them and securing a win is an ever-present aspiration for us.

Seeing you on the ice during the matches, but also today in training, you give the impression of a very united group…

Indeed, this camaraderie is paramount. Throughout my career across various teams and leagues, I have learned that a successful group thrives on mutual friendship and respect, both in and out of the rink. True success is achieved only when a team operates as a cohesive unit, and here in Bolzano, we’ve cultivated a strong bond. The newcomers have seamlessly integrated into our existing dynamic, thanks in large part to the players who have been here for several years. It is crucial for them to pass on the culture of victory, and individuals like Frank, Halmo, and Frigo have fostered a welcoming, familial atmosphere in the locker room over the years. From the moment a new player arrives, they instantly feel like part of the family.

In the initial part of the season he played on a line with Finoro as center and Salinitri as the other wing. With Mike Halmo returning from injury, he is playing on a line with him and Brad Mcclure at center. They are quite different lines…

Indeed, I believe Coach Hanlon is meticulously assessing what combinations yield the best results. Personally, my focus isn’t solely on who I’m paired with, but rather on how well we function as a unit. This year, we have four skilled lines, and the challenge lies in finding the right chemistry among them. Playing alongside talented individuals like Finoro and Salinitri has been advantageous; their remarkable skills and speed provide a significant boost. Recently, I’ve been paired with Halmo, who shares a similar playing style. He brings a physicality that resonates with mine and, with Brad’s speed, we form a diverse line. This blend of attributes is crucial for our success. On a winning team, if someone is off their game or dealing with an injury, there’s always someone ready to step up and deliver outstanding performance in their place. This resilience and readiness are essential for cultivating a championship-winning team.
