Experts have warned that drinking water before bed may pose a major health risk, increase stress, and weaken the immune system.
Health expert Ashley Hainsworth explained that although it is important to keep the body hydrated throughout the day, drinking too much water, especially before bed, can disrupt your sleep and weaken your immune system.
She said that our body’s internal clock controls various functions, including the amount of fluid in our bodies.
“Hydrating early in the day is crucial to ensure your body has enough time to process fluids and reduce the possibility of disturbances during the night.”
Ashley warned that drinking too much water before bed makes the kidneys produce more urine, which leads to going to the bathroom more times. This can disrupt your natural sleep cycle, which might harm your health in the long term. According to the Mirror newspaper.
It also highlighted that interrupted sleep prevents deep, restful sleep, which is necessary for optimal physical and mental health.
She added: “Constant disruption to our sleep cycle, especially due to frequent trips to the bathroom during the night, is not just an inconvenience – it is a serious threat to our overall health.
This can lead to increased stress, poor cognitive function, a weakened immune system, and even an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular problems and diabetes.
Regarding the best time of day to drink plenty of water, Ashley advises drinking water early in the morning and keeping your water intake consistent throughout the day.
She also suggests reducing fluid intake in the hours before bedtime: “In the two hours before bedtime, gradually reduce your fluid intake. This allows your body enough time to process the fluids, reducing the risk of troublesome upsets.”
It is also recommended to avoid any type of caffeine such as tea, coffee and some soft drinks before bed, reports Bristol Live .
