Opposition protests ruling party’s victory in Angolan elections

Angola’s opposition announced that it was protesting once morest the ruling party’s victory in the legislative elections that gave outgoing President Joao Lourenço a second term on Monday, at the conclusion of a fiercely contested vote.

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola won 51.17% of the vote, according to the National Electoral Commission, compared to 43.95% for UNITA, the first opposition party.

Its Secretary-General, Álvaro Chicoamanga Daniel, said in a video announcement on Tuesday that UNITA “does not recognize the results” of the National Electoral Council and will “make a provisional appeal.”

The party led by Adalberto Costa Junior (60 years old) asserts that it was “not informed of the decision” of the committee approving the results, and that it did not receive “a copy of the vote count report.”

Candidates have 72 hours following the official results are announced to file an appeal with the Constitutional Court.
