NEW DELHI > Opposition parties and religious-communal organizations have slammed the Modi government’s single-civil code move aimed at gaining gains in the Lok Sabha polls through communal polarization. The Muslim Personal Law Board responded that it would strongly oppose the Single Civil Code move. Opposition parties like Left parties, Congress and DMK also came forward once morest the unilateral move of the central government. Tribal organizations in Meghalaya and Jharkhand had already announced that they would resist the move. The Muslim Personal Law Board held an emergency meeting in Bhopal on Tuesday following Modi stated that the country needs a single civil code. A draft to be submitted to the Law Commission has been prepared in opposition to the Single Civil Code move. Board member Maulana Khalid Rasheed Rahmani said that he will oppose the Uniform Civil Code more strongly before the Law Commission. Not only the Muslim community, but all religions like Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis are opposing it for various reasons. India is a country where even the language changes every 100 km. Everyone has different prayer styles and rituals. Ceremonies like marriage also have special rituals. Freedom of religion is guaranteed by the Constitution – Rahmani said. The CPI(M) Politburo had stated the other day that a single civil code is not necessary at present. PB stated that it is necessary to ensure equal rights for women of all communities and this should be made possible through reforms in the respective personal laws. KC Venugopal, general secretary of the Congress organization, responded that the Prime Minister’s attempt to divert attention from popular issues like price rise and unemployment. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin responded that the single civil code should be implemented in the Hindu community first. The tribal council of Meghalaya had passed the resolution last week.
