An opposition majority called, this Wednesday (21), for the interruption of the functions of the “interim government” of Juan Guaidó in Venezuela, considering that, four years following his self-proclamation, the mechanism has lost strength without achieving its objectives of political change. .
“We address the country to restore the validity of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the interruption of the functions of the interim government, scheduled for the next 4th of January”, says the statement, signed by 69 of the 112 opponents who supported the self-proclamation of Guaidó in 2019, when the opposition controlled Parliament.
“The expected liberation objectives were not achieved, and the country claims new paths that lead us to democracy”, highlights the text of the group, formed by members of the largest opposition parties: Democratic Action (AD), First Justice (PJ) and A New Time (UNT).
The petition comes on the eve of a session of the elected Parliament in 2015, which defends its validity because it considers that the 2020 legislative elections, won by Chavismo, were a fraud.
The session was convened last weekend by Guaidó, according to whom the “Presidency in charge is essential for the non-recognition of the regime” of Nicolás Maduro, diplomatic recognition and “the protection” of the country’s assets abroad. The group of opponents, however, points out that the broad international support that Guaidó had in 2019 has diminished.
The United States remains Guaidó’s main ally, but he has lost support from countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Peru and Colombia.
The figure of the “interim government” has created major divisions for months within the opposition, which has already called for primary elections to be held in 2023 to define a single candidate to face Maduro in the 2024 presidential elections.
The group of opponents considers that the opposition should focus on obtaining “free, fair and verifiable elections, the recovery of the population’s standard of living” and assistance to the humanitarian emergency.
