Opposition leaders react to Piero Maroun’s arrest

On the evening of Friday, August 16, the arrest of opposition leader Piero Maroun was unofficially announced.

The information was released by Henry Ramos Allup through his account on the social network X, who highlighted that Piero Maroun was arrested while having dinner with family.

“I report that comrade Piero Maroun, National Secretary of Organization, while having dinner with his wife and sister-in-law in a restaurant today at 10:20 pm, was detained by three unidentified persons who forced him to board a Toyota pickup truck with license plate AB873CD,” said Ramos Allup.

For his part, Edmundo González Urrutia also reacted to the events on the same social network, emphasizing that “we demand the immediate release of Piero Maroun, National Secretary of the Democratic Action Organization.”

Meanwhile, Vente Venezuela representative Maria Corina Machado also rejected Maroun’s arrest.

Machado stressed in his post that “with this, there are more than 1,300 arrests since we won on July 28. They will not be able to hide with their repression what everyone knows.”

Piero Maroun

Piero Maroun assumed the position of AD organization secretary in January 2024, replacing the former deputy and former candidate for the 2023 opposition primaries, Carlos Prosperi, who denounced irregularities within the process and received criticism from the opposition and his own party.

Maroun was also a councilor for the Ezequiel Zamora municipality in the state of Monagas.

He also ran for mayor of the town several times. In 2015, he won a seat as a deputy in the National Assembly for this eastern region.
