Opposition deputies submit more than 200 indications from fishing companies – La Discusión 2024-07-11 17:35:43

A scandal broke out on Wednesday in the Fisheries Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, following it was revealed that opposition parliamentarians submitted more than 200 proposals identical to the proposals of the business association Sonapesca in the midst of the processing of legislation to replace the controversial Longueira Law.

The issue was brought to light thanks to a report by Ciper, which reported that deputies Christian Moreira (UDI), Sergio Bobadilla (UDI) and Bernardo Berger (independent-RN) copied and pasted 211 proposals from the group in question and presented them as indications, which generated indignation on the part of the pro-government members of the commission.

Although deputies and senators usually collect proposals from companies, trade associations, federations and experts during legislative debates to later present them as proposals, parliamentarians accuse that this case goes beyond the norm due to the high number of suggestions copied to Sonapesca.

In the midst of the debate, the Undersecretary of Fisheries, Julio Salas, described the news as “painful” because it concerns the processing of legislation that replaces the controversial Longueira Law.

“A situation of this kind cannot lead us to inaction, saying that we cannot have a transparent and properly developed law,” the undersecretary lamented.

In the face of the controversy, both Moreira and Berger withdrew their signatures from the document presented; however, Bobadilla maintained his position, since all members of the commission had access to the report and it was delivered “in a transparent manner.”

Processing suspended

The Commission suspended the processing of the new fisheries legislation until the Secretariat clarifies, through a report, which indications were copied and pasted from Sonapesca’s proposals.

The background information will also be submitted to the Ethics Committee, specifically to the General Secretary of the Corporation, Miguel Landeros, to decide on behalf of the entity whether to file a complaint for possible crimes.
