Opposition asks the Judiciary to expel Judge Daniel Urrutia – La Discusión

The opposition insists on the expulsion of Judge Daniel Urrutia from the Judiciary, following he allowed dangerous inmates from the High Security Prison to make video calls.

Senator Iván Moreira (UDI) argued that these are “benefits that do not correspond when the rule of law and national security are at stake, and what we want to ask of the Judiciary is suspension and expulsion.”

“Judge Urrutia begins to victimize himself, he has maintained that he has received death threats, we do not legitimize any type of threats, but I do want to tell him that those who threaten him are people who have nothing to do with drug trafficking, with crime organized, because all those people are happy with having a judge of this category,” he stressed.

According to a report required by the Court of Appeals, Urrutia based his decision on UN regulations, which recommend social ties for detainees, in addition to the fact that the inmates had been without contact with their families for more than seven months.

Urrutia’s lawyer, Carlos Quezada, questioned that “What is the reason for the controversy? I believe that the reason has to do with obtaining a political dividend, which is logical, politicians necessarily have to pay an electoral bill, they need the votes and it is an issue that gives votes. Not so the Judiciary, which is an independent body, an independent power, which must necessarily be governed by legislation.”

“That makes Judge Urrutia’s resolution even more relevant, because it is legally perfectly correct and consistent with the rule of law, but probably at the level of public opinion, it is an unpopular election, and that is precisely the objective of the Judiciary. “Not making decisions based on levels of popularity of public opinion, but rather applying current law,” he added.
