In favor: There are no sacred works

“Music is a game” was one of the phrases that Fito Páez repeated the most in interviews following the departure of EADDA9223, which is nothing other than the reversal of The love following Loverecorded 30 years following that album that forever changed his life and that of Argentine music in general.
If there is something that was clear from the beginning, it is that nothing might match those hymns that became immortal; from the song that gives the album its title to the closing with to roll my lifeThey are all classic.
Páez himself also highlighted it on several occasions: “It’s impossible to tie that record, we’re going following something else.” And that other “thing” is precisely the most valuable part of this risky adventure: desacralize those songs, dare to play them in a different way, with other times, other arrangements, other guests.
In fact, precisely the most successful versions are the ones that most break with the original: from the imprint swing latin of Traffic through Kathmandu with Elvis Costello, going through Sasha… in bolero key western that seems made to the perfect measure of Mon Laferte, right down to the variations of The Balada de Donna Helenna with Wos and Ca7riel (from 6×8 to power rap), to name just a few cases.
On the other hand, those that respect their original form too much are the ones that, in the end, remain halfway. Those are the cases of the veronicawith a somewhat wasted Nathy Peluso, Bright on the micown to Let’s roll… y the magic wheelwho even reoffends with Andrés Calamaro (why not invite someone else in that case?).
What is ultimately valued is the risk that Fito assumes, no matter what they say. Because it must also be said: many of those who criticize this audacity are the same ones who maintain that the man from Rosario “did not release” good songs from those. Surely, they fell so in love with those classics that they needed to listen to their latest albums a lot more and discover some gems. Of course, it is a pity that I do not play them live more often. Will a new stage begin?
Against: I miss that fascination

Fito presented days ago EADDA9223 with drums and cymbals. And it was not for less, the original album was a unique gem of its kind that had the fortune to age like “Benjamin Button”.
Not only did he have endless hits catchy, but there were top-class guests on them (has anyone else ever had Calamaro, Spinetta, Charly and Mercedes Sosa together on a studio album?).
It is clear that this bill cannot be matched today, not so much because there are no stars (in fact, there are and they are on this new album), but because The love following Love It is the vintage photo that has already passed. And precisely because it’s over, and it was great, it’s that you have to remember it as that: a milestone in local music.
No one is saying that Páez can’t take the reins of his work and do whatever he wants with it, in fact he did. The problem that Fito has, like anyone who has done something great, is that he will carry that weight forever and the rest of what he does will have that as a measuring rod.
So, knowing that it is impossible to replicate or surpass that freshness, anger and spontaneity, why go back to a classic? The desire may be a justification for him, but for the public it may not be a sufficient reason to fall in love with them.
It has to be said: EADDA9223 It’s a very good album, but it lacks that “I don’t know what” that the original has. The beginning of the album is too cinematic and pompous, full of orchestral arrangements that go once morest the spirit of the songs. It is possible that this is the idea, but I insist, it is not enough to fascinate us.
There are highly washed versions, like those of two days in the life (what happened to that speed, that daring and that feeling of jumping with the car at the Thelma y Louise?) y the veronicawith a wasted Nathy Peluso.
Of course there are other songs that make up for those disappointments, but the final feeling is that of a mismatched record. And compared to the original, EADDA9223 loses out. And it must be said: it was foreseeable and inevitable.
