RTT, bonuses, childcare assistance… even without a diploma it is possible to access this profession which offers many advantages.

According to the Observatory of Inequalities, 82% of poor people have not passed the baccalaureate and a third of them have no diploma at all. Although France is renowned for attaching great importance to diplomas, some companies still give all profiles a chance, particularly for jobs such as store salesperson, waiter, maintenance agent or multi-skilled worker. However, among the professions open to people without a diploma or who do not have a diploma higher than bac +3, one is particularly interesting in terms of advantages. Here are a few :

Childcare allowance for children under 3 years old at 100 euros gross per month per child Holiday bonus of 400 euros per year Annual bonus for non-executives of 400 euros on average Annual operating bonus equivalent to 12.8 % of monthly salary Profit of 400 euros if collective objectives are achieved Matching contribution of 300 euros gross per year for 1,500 euros placed in group savings 60% coverage of company mutual insurance by the employer (compared to 50% obligatory) 22 days of RTT per year Preferential rates for trips with, for example, a Paris-Lyon round trip for 2 people at 18 euros instead of 388 euros.

This job of “train manager” or “train salesperson” for the SNCF is the one that is commonly called “controller”. However, its missions are not limited to the control of transport tickets. A controller must also inform passengers, ensure their safety, and check the cleanliness and operation of on-board facilities. If no diploma is required to practice it, the job description of the SNCF nevertheless mentions experience of more than 3 years in commerce or customer relations. However, this requirement varies of an offer from job to another. Some mention “an interesting experience” in this field without specifying the duration, others a shorter experience.

Regarding salary, for a TER train manager in Metz we find between 29,940 and 31,940 euros gross annually and for a salesperson on board trains in Tarbes, 24,700 to 31,800 euros gross annually, i.e. salaries between 1,605 and 2,076 euros net. This includes the variable which represents up to 25% of the salary of SNCF controllers. A widespread practice in the retail sector, but which is not always unanimous among employees. In an interview with Le Parisien, Alex, SNCF controller, explained how the absence of a bonus during his sick leave had forced him to return to work once morest the advice of his doctor. Concerning seniority, in the group for 22 years, he declared receiving 2,300 to 2,500 euros net per month with the variable.

Although SNCF has 10,000 controllers in its workforce, it still recruits several hundred people per year for this position. Currently, nearly 30 offers are online throughout France. Mobility in the job search therefore increases the chances of landing a position. Furthermore, Pôle Emploi indicates that 1,000 offers for “public transport controller” (not limited to SNCF) are published each year and that 940 job seekers follow them.
