Oppo about to disappear in France

It does not smell very good for Oppo in France. The brand, owned by the Chinese giant BBK (which also owns Realme and OnePlus), is out of stock: the manufacturer’s online store attach indeed a “sold out product” label on each of its smartphones (these remain available from retailers). This does not bode well and recalls the German antecedent: since last summer, neither Oppo nor OnePlus have sold smartphones across the Rhine.

The crux of the problem is legal. Oppo failed to renew the contract between the manufacturer and Nokia, the latter holding important patents related to 4G / 5G telephony. A licensing agreement was signed in 2018, but it has since ended. A complaint was filed in Germany, forcing the two brands to stop selling their devices. And in France, a similar procedure might well force Oppo to stop the costs – OnePlus continues to sell its smartphones directly in France, but until when?

« Oppo places great importance on the role of intellectual property in innovation. Oppo has a history of establishing cross-licensing agreements with many industry-leading companies, including Nokia in 2018 “, explains the company to Frandroid. « We always do our best to resolve the matter amicably with Nokia (…) we believe that a reasonable royalty for a cross-licensing structure should fairly reflect the patent values of both parties ».

For current customers, number 5 in France with 3,5 % of the market around assures that its priority is to continue to provide “ great service nothing changes for support or software updates.
