Oppenheimer reveals himself in an incandescent trailer

Christopher Nolan’s first Oppenheimer trailer is here. Carried by Cillian Murhy, the film will return to the life and work of the American scientist who was nicknamed “the father of the atomic bomb”.

While the teaser of Barbie with Margot Robbie aired this weekend, it’s now the turn ofOppenheimer, its competitor on July 19, 2023 in French cinemas, to unveil its trailer. In it, we discover Cillian Murphy in the skin of the American scientist, father of the atomic bomb, his prophetic voice, announcing the disaster and the human catastrophe that his invention risks causing at the dawn of the Second World War.

Oppenheimer or Nolan’s film references

As the first pictures left guessing, Christopher Nolan’s film will alternate between two periods. The first, in color, will focus on the Manhattan Project. We can thus see Robert Oppenheimer’s research, via plans and a photograph that recall a certain Tenet (2020). The second, in black and white, will focus on the trial of Robert Oppenheimer during the era of McCarthyism. Considered a political opponent, the physicist had to appear in court because of his distrust of thermonuclear weapons, at the end of the 1939-1945 war.

This time period should be particularly interesting, given that Oppenheimer appears very perplexed by his creation in the trailer. ” They won’t fear it until they understand it. And they won’t understand it until they use it. I don’t know if it’s reasonable to entrust us with such a weapon.” can we hear in the trailer.

The two parts are interspersed with incandescent passages, reminiscent of the contemplative sequences ofInterstellar (2014), another feature film by Christopher Nolan. With Oppenheimerthe director seems to condense several elements of his filmography: the black and white borrowed from Following (1998), his first film, with a five-star cast reminiscent ofInception (2010), as well as his passion for the Second World War stemming from Dunkirk (2017). Tempting references that we can’t wait to discover on the big screen, three years later TenetwhileOppenheimer also looks impressive.

True to his showmanship, the American filmmaker indeed filmed an atomic explosion, without visual effects. Finally, to note, on the casting side and although they do not appear in this first unveiled trailer, which we will also find alongside the trio composed of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr., Florence PughMatt Damon, Dane DeHaan, Kenneth Branagh, ou encore de Josh Hartnett.
