Opinion: Horse trading with the “Last Generation”

The climate stickers had blocked many streets in the Lower Saxony state capital of Hanover in the past few days. “This has to come to an end,” said the green Mayor Belit Onay of the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” and made a deal with the activists, a horse trade: The gluers will hold back today and tomorrow when the OB decides for a “social council “ begins. Council President Onay promised to write a letter to the federal government proposing the establishment of such a council.

By his own admission, the chairman of the Hanover Council condemns the form of protest by the climate stickers, but he negotiated with them and thereby legitimized their illegal provocations. What’s more, he supports the call for the establishment of an undemocratic institution. Those who previously thought the Republic of Councils was history must now take note of how an elected citizen representative is supporting an assault on our representative democracy by championing parallel councils.

The “Last Generation” explained what a social council should be like: “It is made up of randomly drawn people who represent the population of Germany as best as possible according to criteria such as age, gender, educational qualifications and migration background.” It is the lot that decides, not the will of the voters. And who determines the citizens who come into the lottery wheel? Presumably the “Last Generation” and their financiers. One can assume that Onay would have a good chance of winning with his level of education and his migration background. Unless some future patriotic movement excludes precisely the intelligent migrants because they have a different image of the “German Council”. So maybe it’s not just regarding the nine-euro ticket and the climate?

We are also observing a strong tendency among those involved to educate themselves regarding the right people for the so-called traffic turnaround. Autocratic developments are not just reserved for big politics these days. (Peter Schwerdtmann/cen)
